Health Service Contacts at Christmas Island Detention Centre

All asylum seekers departing Christmas Island are issued with a copy of their medical records. In the event that these records are mislaid by patients or not brought to medical appointments, please be advised that GPs and practice nurses may now contact the following people with queries about medical attention received on the island:

Catch-up vaccinations: Jenny Edwards
Jenny Edwards is the Immunisation Nurse who does all the vaccinations at the detention centre. Please note that vaccinations are no longer provided at Christmas Island Hospital.

Health assessments: Robert Grenlund
Robert Grenlund is the International Health and Medical Service (IHMS) Health Services Manager to contact on Christmas Island.
 
Note: This information relates to patients who have arrived directly from Christmas Island and have not received further medical attention elsewhere prior to their arrival in Victoria.

Refugee Health Fellow Contacts at RCH and RMH

Two positions in Refugee Health, based at the Royal Children's Hospital (Dr Kirsty Walsh, an advance trainee in paediatrics) and the Royal Melbourne Hospital (Dr Tom Schulz, an Infectious Diseases Physician) provide education and support, particularly to GPs and specialists who see refugees in their practice.

A specialist immigrant health clinic operates at each of the hospitals:
1) Royal Children’s Hospital: Monday afternoon (clinic coordinator is Helen Milton, contacted through RCH switchboard on 9345 5522 or email helen.milton@rch.org.au)
2) Royal Melbourne Hospital : Tuesday morning (telephone 9342 7212 or fax 9342 7277 for
appointments).

Immunisation

Refugee/Humanitarian Entrant Catch Up Vaccine Order Form and Eligibility Criteria 
The form provides a guide for additional vaccines for Refugees and Humanitarian entrants and has recently been updated.

Immunisation factsheets in languages other than English are available from the Victorian Government's Department of Health website. Twenty languages are featured including Karen, Arabic, Somali and Dari.

Translating and Interpreting Services (TIS)

TIS Doctors Priority Line
The Doctors Priority Line 131 450 is a free telephone interpreting service which assists GPs in their communication with non-English speaking patients.

‘Cue Cards’ is a new resource developed by Eastern Health Transcultural Services to assist health professionals and clients / carers who primarily have English language difficulties, or problems communicating with each other.

Healthy Living in Australia
The Healthy Living in Australia booklet is a 44-page pictorial guide to living healthy in Australia. The resource is based on foods readily available in Australia to assist newly arrived community members as well as the broader community, make healthy food choices. The booklet is available to order from the Migrant Information Centre in Arabic, Chin (Hakha), Chinese, English and Karen. The booklet can also be downloaded (free of charge).
